The National Disability Insurance Scheme can be confusing and difficult to navigate, especially when you might be a new participant or the family or carer of a new participant. Choosing an NDIS provider can be a difficult decision to navigate and for some may feel overwhelming or confusing.

Below is some information that will hopefully make this decision a little less confusing or overwhelming.

What is an NDIS Provider?

A provider is an organisation delivering a support or a product to an NDIS Participant. Organisations or individuals can apply to be a registered NDIS provider with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission (NDIS Commission)

A provider could provide many different supports including supports such as plan management, support coordination, home help, social support, house modifications, assistive technology, or allied health supports.

What is an NDIS Registered Provider?

An NDIS registered provider is a provider who has successfully applied for NDIS Registration to the NDIS Quality and safeguards Commission. NDIS registered providers have met the strict quality and safety standards of the NDIS Commission. This is assessed via a 3 yearly audit process against the NDIS Practice Standards and the NDIS Code of Conduct.

For an organisation to be approved they need to show the following:

  • All workers have completed an NDIS worker screen including police check, working with children check and international police check.
  • Demonstrate High standard of quality services
  • In depth documentation to reduce the risk for the participant.
  • Transparent Policies including complaints management and incident management policies including notifying the NDIS Commission of any reportable incidents,
  • Complete ongoing Audits

Do you have to use an NDIS Registered Provider?

Most of the time you do not have to choose an NDIS registered provider, however this will be dependent on how your funds are managed. There are three ways your NDIS funds can be managed.

  1. Self-managed – This means you are running your own NDIS plan. If you’re self-managed you can choose to use a registered or non-registered NDIS provider. You will pay for the service, then apply to get the money back from your NDIS plan.
  2. Plan-managed – This means that your NDIS plan is managed by a third party. These third parties are known as plan managers. Plan managers will help you by monitoring your funds and paying providers for supports delivered. If you are plan-managed you can choose a registered or non-registered provider.
  3. NDIA (agency)-managed – This means that the NDIS manages your funding on your behalf. If you are NDIA-managed you must choose a NDIS registered provider. NDIS registered providers can request payment for services from the NDIS.
